Research Introductions

The study of physics began with the emergence of civilization, and it is a fundamental field that has supported the development of the natural sciences such as chemistry and biology as well as the progress of scientific technology. On the other hand, information science is a new field born only half a century ago with the development of physics and engineering - it is not only state of the art research, but it supports our modern information-oriented society. In the Department of Physics and Information Science at Yamaguchi University, we are promoting research in the following academic fields in particular.

 

Research Fields

Experimental Physics of Material Properties

 

○ Experimental research

 

Using various X-ray diffraction devices and other experimental apparatus, we research structures and physical properties of materials. Our fields are listed below.

 

・Magnetic physics

・Dielectric physics

・Structural phase transition physics

・Polymer physics

 

○ Theoretical physics of material properties

 

This is a research field of theoretical physics of material properties at low temperature performing theoretical research of molecule and electron activities at low temperatures.

 

Simulation Science

 

If we wish to understand the movement of the molecules during crystallization and melting, it is difficult to ascertain this through experiments alone. Using computers, we investigate the behavior of molecular activity through simulations.

 

Elementary Particle Theory and Cosmology

 

We perform theoretical research on the properties of black holes in self-gravitation systems and unified theory.

 

Radio Astronomy

 

We search for the mysteries of space by observing radio signals from celestial objects using a 32m radio telescope in Yamaguchi.

We also conduct observations using radio telescopes throughout Japan and east Asia. This field includes both physics research and signal processing using a variety of measurement technologies and information theories.

 

Biomechanics

 

Robots cannot walk or play sports like humans. We are using computers and motion capture to investigate tricks in movement of humans and animals acquired in the processes of evolution and learning, utilizing both physics and information technology.

 

Communication Technology

 

Communications through our cellular phones using wireless LANs and optic fibers are an indispensable part of modern life.

 

We research methods to transfer information more rapidly as well as new communications standards for cellular phones.

 

Disaster Support Systems

 

Communication networks such as phone systems often take damage in disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. Constructing emergency communication networks quickly is crucial for preventing further damage and loss of life. We are researching these types of emergency communication networks.

 

Artificial Intelligence and Brain Information Processing

 

We consider the mechanisms used by the brain for memory and learning from an information science perspective, and conduct research on brain information processing systems that can learn and make judgments like the human brain.

 

Genome Information Processing

 

It is common knowledge that genes are expressed and regulate functions in living organisms. By analyzing what is written in these designs using computers, we are searching for the mechanisms through which living organisms express functions and the causes of diseases.

 

Image and Sound Signal Processing

 

We are developing technology for digital watermarks to prevent image theft, methods to find diseases from medical imagery and technology that uses voice recognition to extract words from a person’s voice.
