Department of Mathematical Sciences
Faculty of Science, Yamaguchi University

The Department of Mathematical Sciences aims to develop in its students a comprehensive grasp of the principle of mathematical sciences, together with a productive capacity in research. The courses of study are flexible in subject matter and are conducted by means of lectures, seminars, experiments and colloquia. Undergraduate as well as graduate students have opportunities to carry out research in fields of current interest.
The principal research fields of the Department are Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, and Applied mathematics and Computational mathematics. We shall introduce each section.
Analysis:
Our main subject is the function theory in one complex variable, which includes the theory of compact or non-compact Riemann surfaces, the potential theory, the theory of Klenian groups and moduli spaces etc.
Algebra:
The abstract algebra was invented through the beginning to the middle in the 20th century by Noether, Artin, Neumann and others. The base of this algebra is the so called "RING". In our laboratory, we are comprehensively researching the modern algebra.
Geometry:
In modern mathematics, the notion of manifolds is indispensable. The purpose of geometry is to study structures of manifolds by using algebraic and topological methods and to develop analysis on manifolds.
Applied and Computational Mathematics:
The aim of applied mathematics is to solve various problems of other fields or the real world by applying theresults, methods and ideas of mathematics to them. This section contains several branches of applied mathematics, including numerical analysis, numerical methods for differential equations, computer algebra and coding theory.
